TUCKER HELD CRICKET tight while the last tremor shook her and smiled into her hair. Pleasing her like this made him so happy. He could feel her heart thudding against his own, also thumping hard, as if they were exchanging secret messages.

It was Saturday night and Cricket had persuaded him they should spend the entire weekend together. She’d had very convincing arguments in the form of her mouth and fingers and certain whispered promises that even now sent a rush of lust through him.

He brushed her hair away from her cheek so he could run his fingers over her buttery skin. He loved holding her like this, her body relaxed, her fiery energy stilled by what they’d done. He was good for her, he believed.

“That was nice,” she said, cuddling into his chest.

“Nice? That’s all? I thought the earth moved.”

She chuckled and propped herself up on her elbow, so that her nipple brushed his arm, sending a charge through him. He had it bad.

“Actually, the earth cracked and split and I fell to China and back,” she said, running a finger in circles on his chest.

“That’s what I like to hear,” he said, kissing the breast that brushed his arm.

“The weekend’s almost over,” she said sadly. Since Friday night, they’d barely left the bed long enough to forage for food at a nearby truck stop.

“It went too fast,” he said, trying to memorize the soft, sex-flushed look on her face, the tangled toss of her hair. “You’re something else, you know that?”

“But what? What else am I?” she teased.

But he wanted to be serious just now. This might be his last chance. He took her hand and linked his fingers with hers, then kissed her knuckles. “You’re a beautiful woman, an amazing lover and a passionate idealist.”

“And a good teacher?” she asked, serious, too. “Am I good, Tucker, in your professional opinion?”

He winced at her question. It reminded him how inappropriate it was to be in bed with a teacher who worked for him. “I’ll be doing a formal evaluation next month. Let’s not talk about school when we’re here.”

“Okay, but as a friend what do you think of my teaching?”

He studied her. “As a friend?”

“And a lover,” she said in a sultry tone. “It gets me so hot when you talk pedagogy.”

He chuckled, loving the way she managed to joke away his guilt. She was good for him, too. “Okay, in my personal opinion, you’re doing great. You have excellent rapport with your students. Your lessons show preparation. You have innovative ideas. You just need more experience and a better handle on discipline and you’re on the road to being exceptional.”

“But I’ve got a ways to go?”

“You can’t expect perfection in a few weeks.”

“It’s because of that chemistry lab you saw me flub, isn’t it? I introduced the experiment and explained the results they should get, but once they got going, I kind of got lost.”

“That’s normal. After you’ve run the same lab a few times, you’ll be better able to keep things on track.
